The Gallery endeavours to investigate and heighten awareness of works of art and other material in the collection.
Gallery staff undertake research to both document the collection and ensure that works of art can be understood and interpreted within a wider cultural context. Scientific research is carried out in order to learn more about the material nature of works of art in the collection and the methods used to create them. This research serves to assist in the care and conservation of the collection.
Research in the Gallery is documented and disseminated through scholarly publications, collection catalogues, exhibitions catalogues, exhibitions and displays, conferences, symposia and lectures.
