Gifting to the Library and Archives

'The Gift of Knowledge', now open in the Print Gallery

From substantial collections to individual items, the Gallery, since its foundation, has welcomed gifts to the library and archive collections. This display (on view 17 October-15 December 2011), which featured material from the Centre for the Study of Irish Art and the Yeats Archive, together with books and documents from the recent gift of Sir Denis Mahon’s library and archive, celebrated how donations such as these have vastly enriched the institution and its research facilities.

All of the items that were on display have been presented over the years by individuals who recognise the cultural and educational importance of library and archives in contributing to our knowledge of art and artists, culture and heritage. Today, thanks to the generosity of these benefactors, the Library and Archives of the National Gallery of Ireland form one of the most important research collections in the country for the study of the visual arts.
