William Orpen (1878-1931) wrote this letter to his patron and future mistress Mrs St George while staying at the home of the Vere Foster family in county Louth. He was painting their family portrait at the time and was particularly amused by the daughter Biddy, who liked to dress as a boy. He writes that he will be in Galway to see Mrs St George on Thursday but complains that he will have to get the early train from Dublin. The letter includes a sketch of Orpen with Biddy Foster and one on the reverse of the artist struggling to get dressed in time for the morning train.
