Researching Louis le Brocquy (1916-2012) at the National Gallery of Ireland
The literature on the painting A Family is relatively extensive for a single Irish painting produced in the mid 20th century. Two essays which discuss the painting in detail are by Dr. Síghle Bhreathnach-Lynch (Circa, 2007) and Dr. Róisín Kennedy (Third Text, 2005) which both trace the exhibition history of the painting and the critical responses it has received over the decades. Mick Wilson, in his catalogue entry (Hugh Lane, 2007), analyses Le Brocquy's painting in relation to the work of Old Master artists, particularly the tradition of reclining nudes in the work of Giorgione, Goya, Manet and Cézanne. Other references to the painting are included in more general accounts of modern Irish painting notably S. B. Kennedy (1997). The CSIA also holds an artist folder containing a variety of ephemera relating to Louis le Brocquy's artwork and career.
