This portrait by Maclise depicts the art collector and scholor Sir Andrew Fountaine (1676–1753). In 1707 Fountaine was appointed Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod and accompanied Thomas Herbert, eighth earl of Pembroke, and newly appointed lord lieutenant of Ireland, to the opening of the Irish parliament. While in Ireland Fountaine became friends with Jonathan Swift. He made two grand tours of Europe in his lifetime, collecting antiquities and artefacts, as was popular at the time.
