By 1825 Maclise had opened a small studio, on Patrick Street in Cork, where he worked on portrait commissions procured by his wealthy patron, Richard Sainthill. This portrait of the Catholic Merchant John Maguire, whose eldest son, John Francis Maguire (1815-1872) established the nationalist Cork Examiner newspaper, was executed in the late 1820s, probably before Maclise left for London in the summer of 1827.
