Overview The National Gallery of Ireland houses the national collection of historic Irish and European fine art. It is located on Merrion Square in the heart of Georgian Dublin directly adjacent to Leinster House, the seat of the Dáil (the Irish Parliament). Along with it's sister institutions the Natural History Museum, the National Museum and the National Library, encircling Leinster House, it constitutes part of a Museum quarter. The series of buildings which make up the Gallery have been developed over the past 150 years with the Millennium wing inaugurated as recently as 2002. The purpose of the scheduled intervention is to realise a critical element in the Master Plan for the Gallery that not only addresses the repair of the ageing fabric but also works to unify the disparate elements that constitute the complex, contributing to a clearer and more coherent structure and allowing for future development. |
