Q. How much is admission to the Gallery?

A. Admission to the National Gallery is free. However, the Gallery welcomes donations, which are used to support the many programmes provided as part of its service to the public. We suggest €5. Visitors are welcome to leave their donations in the designated boxes located around the building.

Q. When is the Gallery open?

A. The Gallery is open 361 days of the year. It is closed on the 24th, 25th and 26th December, and on Good Friday.
The opening hours are as follows:
Monday – Saturday: 9.30am – 5.30pm
Thursday: 9.30am – 8.30pm
Sunday: 12pm- 5.30pm
Public Holidays: 10am – 5.30pm
Please note that the rooms will begin to clear 15 minutes before the Gallery closes.

Q. Does the Gallery stay open late on certain evenings?

A. The Gallery stays open till 8.30pm every Thursday.

Q. Does the Gallery offer any special programmes during this late opening?

A. Yes. The Gallery regularly schedules gallery talks and lecture series on Thursday evenings. Please note that lectures are also regularly presented on Tuesday mornings at 10.30 am, and on Sunday afternoons at 3pm. There are often concerts in the Gallery on Sunday afternoons too.

Q. Is there somewhere to eat in the Gallery?

A. The Gallery has a café and a restaurant, catered by Itsa. Lunch is served between 12pm and 3pm, with teas, coffees and light snacks served throughout the day.

Q. Can I take photos in the Gallery?

A. The National Gallery of Ireland (NGI) permits still and video photography for personal (non-commercial) use in the public galleries except in special exhibition areas or where specifically prohibited.

Q. Does the Gallery have any special activities for children and teenagers?

A. The Gallery has a large number of activities for children of all ages. For parents and carers with newborn children, we have a New Parent’s Tour on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 2pm. For older children aged between 4 and 12, there is at least one free family workshop per week where the children can learn about some of the paintings in the collection, and make something to bring home with them. The Gallery also has family packs available to borrow from the Information Desk located on Clare Street, with fun trails and drawing materials.
For teenagers and young adults, the Gallery regularly organises courses during the year.

Q. Does the Gallery give valuations of works of art belonging to members of the public?

A. It is the policy of the National Gallery of Ireland not to give valuations on works belonging to members of the public. The Gallery does, however, run a picture clinic on the first Thursday of every month (except August and January) between 10am and 12pm where members of the public wishing to find out more about a work of art in their possession (e.g. provenance, artist etc) can bring the work in to be looked at by members of the National Gallery’s curatorial staff.

Q. Does the Gallery cater for private/corporate functions and events?

A. Yes. The National Gallery of Ireland offers companies and individuals the opportunity to host functions in a variety of locations, including the Millennium Wing and No.5 Clare Street. Functions can range from receptions for up to 400 people to dinners for up to 200 people.
