A black and white photograph of a man standing in a windswept hilly landscape, with a wooden palette directly behind him. He has long curly hair underneath a cap, and is laughing at the camera.

Robyn, 2024

Photograph

"I met Robyn briefly in a Donegal village a few  years ago. I was told he lived in the hills but had no luck finding him. This summer I was on the hunt again, but he found me. As I was hiking past what I thought an abandoned house, he came out. Birdsong told him there was someone close. Robyn was welcoming and showed me around his small hill farm. I then took this picture, which I feel captures the essence of his lifestyle and personality." - Kevin Sharkey

Kevin Sharkey uses photography to try to capture  the narrative of what he is seeing or feeling in a scene. Photography allows him to freeze certain moments, highlighting details not normally seen  and which can reveal multiple layers, glimpses of the surreal in the real. His current focus is on the study of people through photography. He is drawn to certain characteristics of a person or their personal story and, when allowed, takes pictures of them in the hope of capturing and translating some element of who they are or what they are feeling.
