Vanessa Jones
Cabbage Baby (self-portrait), 2021
Oil on linen
Vanessa’s self-portrait explores themes of the walled garden, employing primarily medieval symbols to engage the viewer in ideas of myth, beauty, replication and duality as it relates to the feminine archetype. Cabbage Baby is modelled after Botticelli’s Medici portraits, as well as mother and child icons and sculptures of Silk Road Buddhas to reflect Vanessa’s own heritage, while exploring the duality of protection and threat through the use of symbolic associations.
