Gearóid Arthur Hayes
Kwena Chokoe, 2023
Oil on canvas
"This portrait is the last of a number of collaborations between me and Johannesburg-based photographer Kwena Chokoe. She first sat for me in Florence in 2007, the introduction coming by way of fellow artist Miljan Suknovic, who has recently posed for me. The work was painted exclusively from life over three two-hour sittings, using the sight-size method and executed in what is known colloquially as the Zorn palette." - Gearóid Arthur Hayes
Having attended Clongowes Wood College, Gearóid Hayes went on to read law and business at University College Dublin. He moved to Florence in 2003 to study Fine Art at the Accademia Italiana but soon transferred to the atelier of Charles H. Cecil, where he received his classical training. This was supplemented by periods of study at Sarum Studios under the tutelage of Nicholas Beer. Until recently, Hayes was a principal instructor at the Dublin Drawing School. In 2018, he completed an MPhil at Trinity College, Dublin, where he is now studying for a PhD on Walter Frederick Osborne. A recipient of the Adams Award in 2011, Hayes is represented by the Gorry Gallery, Dublin.
