Looking for Gold, 2020
Egg tempera on true gesso board
Looking for Gold is a portrait of the artist’s husband. The title both implies his desire for spiritual truth and reflects the colours at play in the painting as the light falls over his face. The painting was made in egg tempera, built up in tiny brushstrokes and layers of colour over the chalk white surface of true gesso, previously sanded and layered for smoothness. The close crop of the portrait encourages viewers to approach the painting and to join the sitter’s journey – to share the moment.
