Inspired ideas for festive gifts, special December events and more.
The National Gallery of Ireland is filled with inspiration for Christmas gifts this winter: from luxury Irish-made gifts to membership packages and from art appreciation courses to exhibition tickets, there’s something for everyone this December.
The popular Gallery Shop is the perfect place to find gifts for loved ones this festive season. Irish designers are the focus, with many items inspired by works that can be found on the walls of the National Gallery of Ireland. Specially created for the Gallery’s current exhibition Lavery: On Location, a companion book - written and edited by curators Kenneth McConkey and Brendan Rooney and featuring essays and images from cover to cover – makes the perfect gift for any art or book lover. A Lavery scarf, woven by John Hanly & Co. at their woollen mills in County Tipperary, takes inspiration from the artist’s work. Other Gallery Shop products include an Eau Lovely 7 Chakra Box of gemstone and soy wax candles and a set of plastic-free reusable Christmas crackers, available in a selection of colours. The Gallery Shop also stocks all of those last-minute Christmas needs including art-inspired wrapping paper, festive cards and themed stationery. There is a wide variety of books in store, from how-to manuals to Irish novels and art anthologies, and the Gallery Shop also boasts a diverse selection of gifts for children and young people, including art supplies, playful plush toys and graphic novels.
Open seven days a week right up to Christmas Eve, the Gallery Shop staff are available to recommend the ideal book, scarf, toy or print for everyone’s special someone. For two weeks from 27 November 2023, Friends of the National Gallery of Ireland will receive a 15% discount at the Gallery Shop.
For that person who has everything, giving the gift of membership to the National Gallery of Ireland could be the perfect solution. Membership for a year starts from €35 and includes countless benefits including free unlimited entry to Gallery exhibitions; lectures and tours especially for members; a 10% discount in the Gallery Shop and Café year round; and early-bird booking for some events. The year of membership is activated by the recipient on the date of their choice and is valid for up to five years before activation.
For the art lover who wants to learn more, a series of online art appreciation courses go on sale to the public in December. The Gallery’s hugely popular art appreciation courses have welcomed hundreds of participants over the past few years. From the comfort of home – in Ireland or further afield – the 8-week evening courses provide an opportunity to learn about little-known works from the Gallery’s collection or to explore other renowned collections of the world with expert art historians and guest speakers. Next year’s courses begin in January, March and October and cover topics including art in the Age of Decadence and European Masters of the Baroque. Tickets are €150 per course with a 10% discount if all three courses are booked together.
The Gallery’s first major exhibition of 2024 will be announced later in the month and tickets will go on sale on 4 December 2023. Tickets from €5 can be booked in advance online and make for a great last-minute gift. Current exhibition Lavery. On Location, featuring over 70 works by the well-known Irish painter Sir John Lavery, runs until 14 January 2024.
Christmas at the Gallery kicks off in earnest on 7 December 2023 with the final Thursday Lates event of the year. Art facilitators will lead workshops in crafting Christmas baubles or Kwanzaa pouches, Christmas-themed tours will dive deeper into the national collection, and Dublin’s LGBT+ choir Glória will perform to a selection of yuletide favourites. To add to the festive spirit, the Gallery café will offer complimentary mulled cider and mince pies all evening.
Whether you’re looking to find the perfect Christmas gift, attend one of many events and family tours or explore the national collection free of charge, the Gallery is the perfect place to escape this Christmas. Visit nationalgallery.ie for more information.

Pleananna iontacha don Nollaig le déanamh i nGailearaí Náisiúnta na hÉireann
Smaointe iontacha do bhronntanais na Nollag, imeachtaí speisialta i mí na Nollag agus neart eile.
Tá neart bronntanas Nollag le fáil i nGailearaí Náisiúnta na hÉireann an geimhreadh seo: idir só-earraí déanta in Éirinn agus pacáistí ballraíochta agus cúrsaí tuisceana don ealaín agus ticéid taispeántais, tá rud éigin i nGailearaí Náisiúnta na hÉireann do gach duine an Nollaig seo.
Is é Siopa an Ghailearaí an áit is fearr chun bronntanais a fháil do dhaoine muinteartha an Nollaig seo. Tá an phríomhbhéim á leagan ar dhearthóirí Éireannacha, agus tá go leor earraí bunaithe ar shaothair atá le fáil ar bhallaí Ghailearaí Náisiúnta na hÉireann. Cruthaithe go speisialta don taispeántas atá ar siúl sa Ghailearaí faoi láthair dar teideal Lavery: On Location, leabhar comhghabhálach - scríofa agus curtha in eagar ag na coimeádaithe, Kenneth McConkey agus Brendan Rooney, leabhar atá lán le haistí agus íomhánna – bronntanas iontach do dhaoine ar breá leo saothair ealaíne nó leabhair. Scaif Lavery, fíte ag John Hanly & Co. ag a mhuileann olla i gcontae Thiobraid Árann, scaif atá bunaithe ar shaothar John Lavery. I measc na dtáirgí eile atá ar díol i Siopa an Ghailearaí tá 7 Chakra Box of Gemstone Eau Lovely agus pléascóga Nollag in-athúsáidte, saor ó phlaisteach, i ndathanna éagsúla. Chomh maith leis sin, tá bronntanais Nollaig a theastaíonn ag an nóiméad deiridh i gcónaí le fáil i Siopa an Ghailearaí, páipéar beartán bunaithe ar shaothair ealaíne, cártaí Nollag agus stáiseanóireacht théamúil. Tá réimse leathan leabhar le fáil sa siopa, lena n-áirítear lámhleabhair eolais, úrscéalta Éireannacha agus díolamaí ealaíne, agus chomh maith leis sin, tá bronntanais éagsúla le fáil i Siopa an Ghailearaí do leanaí agus daoine óga, lena n-áirítear soláthairtí ealaíne, bréagáin phluise agus úrscéalta grafacha.
Tá Siopa an Ghailearaí oscailte seacht lá na seachtaine go dtí Oíche Nollag, agus beidh foireann an tSiopa in ann an leabhar, an scaif, an bréagán nó an prionta idéalach a mholadh do na daoine speisialta a bhfuil bronntanais tuillte acu. I gcomhair coicíse, ón 27 Samhain 2023, gheobhaidh Cairde Ghailearaí Náisiúnta na hÉireann lascaine 15% i Siopa an Ghailearaí.
Don duine sin a bhfuil gach rud aige cheana féin, seans gur bronntanas iontach a bheadh i mballraíocht le Gailearaí Náisiúnta na hÉireann. Cosnaíonn ballraíocht don bhliain €35 agus san áireamh ansin tá neart buntáistí lena n-áirítear cead isteach saor in aisce do thaispeántais sa Ghailearaí; léachtaí agus turais speisialta do bhaill; lascaine 10% i Siopa agus Caifé an Ghailearaí i rith na bliana; agus cead áirithinte do mhochóirí le haghaidh imeachtaí áirithe. Gníomhachtaíonn an faighteoir bliain na ballraíochta ar dháta dá rogha féin agus tá an bhallraíocht bailí le haghaidh tréimhse cúig bliana roimh ghníomhachtú.
Don té ar breá leis ealaín agus a bhfuil fonn foghlama air, beidh cúrsaí tuisceana don ealaín ar líne ar díol don phobal i mí na Nollag. Bhain na céadta rannpháirtí tairbhe as cúrsaí tuisceana don ealaín a bhí á reáchtáil ag an nGailearaí le blianta beaga anuas. Ó chompord do thí féin – in Éirinn nó níos faide ó bhaile – is deis é an cúrsa tráthnóna 8 seachtaine seo foghlaim faoi shaothair ealaíne an Ghailearaí nach bhfuil mórán ar eolas fúthu nó súil a chaitheamh ar bhailiúcháin cháiliúla eile as ar fud an domhain i gcomhluadar staraithe ealaíne agus aoichainteoirí ar saineolaithe iad. Cuirfear tús le cúrsaí na bliana seo chugainn i mí Eanáir, Márta agus Deireadh Fómhair agus i measc na n-ábhar a ndíreofar orthu tá ealaín in Aois an Mheathlaithe agus Máistrí Eorpacha Barócacha. Cosnaíonn na ticéid €150 do gach cúrsa agus tá lascaine 10% ar fáil má chuirtear na trí chúrsa in áirithe le chéile.
Fógrófar chéad mhórthaispeántas an Ghailearaí don bhliain 2024 níos déanaí sa mhí agus beidh na ticéid ar díol ar an 4 Nollaig 2023. Is féidir ticéad a chosnaíonn €5 a chur in áirithe ar líne roimh ré agus is bronntanas iontach é ticéad mar seo. Mar chuid den taispeántas reatha Lavery. On Location, tá breis is 70 saothar leis an bpéintéir cáiliúil Éireannach Sior John Lavery ar taispeáint. Beidh an taispeántas seo ar siúl go dtí an 14 Eanáir 2024.
Cuirfear tús le Nollaig sa Ghailearaí ar an 7 Nollaig 2023 tráth a reáchtálfar an t-imeacht Thursday Lates deiridh den bhliain. Beidh éascaitheoirí ealaíne i mbun ceardlann atá dírithe ar conas maisiúcháin Nollag nó tiachóga Kwanzaa a dhéanamh, beidh deis ag daoine níos mó a fhoghlaim faoin mbailiúchán náisiúnta i rith turas Nollag, agus beidh cór LADT+ Bhaile Átha Cliath, Glória, ag canadh cuid de na hamhráin Nollag is fearr linn ar fad. D'fhonn cur le spiorad na Nollag, beidh scailtín ceirtlise agus pióga mionra ar fáil do gach duine i rith an tráthnóna. Ní gá táille a íoc.
Is cuma más ag lorg bronntanais Nollag iontach atá tú, más mian leat freastal ar imeacht éigin nó ar thuras teaghlaigh, nó más mian leat súil a chaitheamh ar an mbailiúchán náisiúnta saor in aisce, is fiú cuairt a thabhairt ar an nGailearaí an Nollaig seo. Tá tuilleadh eolais le fáil ar nationalgallery.ie.
