A woman stands behind the red counter of a shop, her elbows on the newspaper open in front of her. Behind her, neatly stacked shelves of groceries, and on the counter a scales and more products.

Miss Evans in her Sweetshop, 2024

Photograph

"Born in 1945, Jennifer Evans has worked in the family shop since she was 16. The shop was opened by her grandmother in 1911 and continues to trade in The Square, Bantry, Co. Cork. While the shop itself has not changed much through the years, it no longer features short-shelf-life goods like milk, bread and newspapers. Before the COVID pandemic, Jennifer would go dancing up to three times a week, but now goes less often. At almost 80 years of age, she has no plans to retire." - David Creedon

David Creedon is a photographic artist whose editorial portraits and storytelling are set against a background of historical narrative. His photographs have featured in a range of international magazines and press publications. He has also exhibited in national galleries and museums in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Africa. His portraits set out to capture the essence of his subjects and to create an emotional resonance with the viewer. The motive behind his portraits is his enduring interest in the human spirit and how, through life experience, ordinary people can have extraordinary lives. In most cases, he creates the portraits in the subjects’ homes or environments where they are most comfortable and relaxed.
