Camille, 2024

Charcoal on paper

"Having long been an admirer of Camille Souter’s work, I was fortunate in 2017 to find myself in her company while on residency at the Heinrich Böll Cottage on Achill Island. Over the following weeks, she invited me to her home to show her my  current work. After some persuasion, she agreed  to my doing her portrait. This drawing is from a series of portraits made this year, in memory of that time, and of Camille’s distinct humour  and personality." - Michael Wann
