Plates & Palettes: Louis Le Brocquy and Maura Laverty collaboration

Join hosts Blanca Valencia and Santina Kennedy for Plates & Palettes, an immersive culinary experience in which we explore the collaboration between the iconic Irish artist Louis le Brocquy and the novelist, playwright and food writer, Maura Laverty.

Louis Le Brocquy was the first artist to be represented in the National Gallery of Ireland’s permanent collection during his lifetime. His sombre work, A Family, a modernist painting with cubist influences, will be juxtaposed with earlier works illustrating Maura Laverty’s 1946 Cookery Book. 

Maura Laverty was a multi-hyphenate: a controversial novelist and playwright, she is credited with penning Ireland’s first TV drama Tolka Road. She was also a prolific food writer and radio show hostesses. Her cookbooks Flour Economy and Full and Plenty were enormously successful. 

In this event we will pair food from Laverty’s books to understand how she created an audience of Irish food lovers in the US by pioneering Irish ingredients. We will also explore her love affair with Spain where she lived and which is the setting of her novel No More than Human, looking at how she interpreted foreign recipes for Irish audiences. Echoing Laverty’s work, we will highlight Irish modern producers and their creations.
