In this lecture, the art historian Dr Bendor Grosvenor (best known from the BBC series 'Britain’s Lost Masterpieces' and 'Fake or Fortune?') will talk about his new book The Invention of British Art.

He will explore what made British art ‘great’? Was it the individual genius of artists like Hogarth and Constable? Or were their careers shaped by Britain's wider society, culture and history? What was the impact of the various invasions and migrations which created 'Britishness' in the first place, and why has the role of art in major events in British history, like the Civil War, been overlooked? And why did the British take so long to get any good at art in the first place?
