Taking a close look at the Portrait Prize, this talk by Curatorial Fellow Sarah McAuliffe will examine the photographic artworks that have formed part of the exhibition between 2018 and 2024, with a particular focus on highly commended and winning portraits. In 2018, Mandy O’Neill’s portrait Diane, Larkin Community College was the first photograph to win the Portrait Prize since its inception. Subsequently, there has been a surge in photographic submissions to the Portrait Prize and each year there is a strong representation of photographic portraits in the exhibition of shortlisted artworks.
The discussion will expand into the Gallery’s collection of photography and the many portraits that have been acquired in recent years, from Man Ray’s studio portrait of James Joyce in 1922 in anticipation of the release of Ulysses that same year to Alvin Langdon Coburn’s depiction of George Bernard Shaw, Le Penseur (1906), in the manner of Rodin’s Thinker. Spanning the 19th century to present day, and varied themes, such as emigration and literature, this talk will cater to a wide array of interests and enthusiasms.
