‘This colourful self-portrait entitled Breakthrough represents challenging myself as an artist. I decided to paint myself looking upwards as it was difficult to capture a likeness at this angle. I often avoid using vibrant colours and decided to add to the challenge by using lots of them. This was also my first ever self-portrait. All aspects of this portrait are areas that I am inexperienced in, making it an artistic breakthrough for me.’
