Beth in Low Light, 2023

Oil on roughened brass plate

"This is a small portrait of my wife, Beth Robertson, painted on roughened brass plate. I paint her portrait at least once a year, and this is the smallest one so far. I find that miniature portraits can contain such power despite their tiny scale. Beth is a fellow artist who specialises in wood engraving and lino cut. This little portrait captures her on an autumn evening, lit by the warm light emanating from her late grandmother’s table lamp." - Robert Jackson

Robert Jackson is a painter and printmaker  based in Wormit, Scotland. He studied Fine Art Printmaking at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, and received his MFA from Duncan Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee. His portrait work is held in collections including the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. In his current practice, he is producing a series of miniature portraits, skyscapes and landscapes painted on tiny brass and copper plates. He is intrigued by the power that miniature paintings can contain and loves the way in which their small scale invites the viewer to get close to the work, generating a unique intimacy between the person and the painting.
