‘The painting is of my mum. I wanted to paint her by candlelight because I love how candlelight reflects rich tones onto her skin. There is something quite unique and special about a portrait painted by candlelight that modern lighting can’t mimic. I wanted to do a light and dark painting with a more modern twist so I staged the portrait to look like it could have been painted in the 1940s.’
