In a tribute published in 1944, celebrated author Elizabeth Bowen remembered her lifelong friendship with pioneering artist Mainie Jellett and her contribution to the art of Ireland. As young girls, they had been taught in Dublin by Elizabeth Yeats and shared ‘the same burning wish’ for creativity. Although they were ultimately to pursue different arts – writing and painting, respectively – this illustrated talk explores their impact on the shape of Irish Modernism, and the overlaps between literature, art, and even music.

This talk is part of a series of events celebrating our exhibition Mainie Jellett and Evie Hone. The Art of Friendship.
