Jerry Saltz as Michelangelo's 'David', 2023
Acrylic on polyester | Unframed: 100 x 80 cm
‘This portrait depicts Jerry Saltz, Pulitzer Prize winner and senior art critic for New York Magazine. It portrays him in a manner reminiscent of Michelangelo’s renowned sculpture David. The portrait arose from the controversy surrounding sixth-grade students who were shown an image at Tallahassee Classical School, Florida. Following objections from three parents who deemed the statue pornographic and inappropriate for children, the principal, Hope Carrasquilla, was ultimately compelled to resign.’
